He is fifty, has been living for a quarter-century in Canada, and had to leave his native communist Romania, and later Israel, before settling here.It has been a journey with quite a few twists and turns, some taken by his own volition, others less so. In his teenage years, he is a major tennis prospect in communist Romania - a regime that knows how to dote on its elite sportsmen - and he lives a privileged life, thanks partly to his athletic talent, but mostly to a politically powerful father.

Nevertheless, his teenage insecurities and frustrations, not least of them what it means to be a Jew in communist Romania, get the better of him many times over. To make things harder yet, his character is not exactly made of steel, and despite his desire to fulfill his athletic promise, he can be quick to succumb to the allure of frivolity and good times. In stark contrast, Daniel’s father, the other main protagonist, has clear convictions and few doubts since he was a young boy living in a Russian Jewish ghetto.

His family flees the Soviet revolution turmoil to Romania, where in his youth he is a fearless street fighter against Jews haters during the fascist regime, and later under communists he reaches power, clout, and influence within the Militia, one of the pillars of the oppressive machinery. Machinery whose workings and the terror, the corruption and the struggle for survival which surround it, overwhelm his story. His father’s exploits during the holocaust are for Daniel the stuff legends are made of, but his crushing fall from power under communists, forever changes Daniel and his course in life.

When powerless and fearing for his life his father must coerce, deceive, and bribe the family’s way out of Romania, Daniel realizes it is time he began to own up to his responsibilities in life. Love, friendship, the meaning of being Jewish, the meaning of Israel, the choices one must make in life, even the Israeli Palestinian impasse – he must nurture and understand them all, if he is ever to amount to anything.Daniel and his father are often cast as witnesses, and at times as participants, in defining events of their eras, and a sobering fresco emerges of times and places which could not have been more apart: a fascist Romania, a communist Romania, a Zionist Israel, and a multicultural Canada.Through it all, Daniel discovers the human capacity for sacrifice for what one truly loves - love which can come in many forms. Now, all is left for Daniel is to choose his sacrifice.Inspired by events in both the author’s and his father’s lives, this gripping story is a work of fiction.
